A shock exit for Milan
After drawing the away leg 1-1 at Bremen, AC Milan was looking forward to book a place in the pre-quarterfinals in the second leg at the San Siro stadium. Fielding a full strength squad against Werder Bremen this time, things were going on well for Milan in the first half of the game. Supported by first half goals by Pirlo in the 27th minute and Pato in the 33rd, Milan was right on track at mid time.
With a 3-1 goal aggregate, Milan decided to get off with a defensive play in the second half. However, Werder Bremen came up with a clinical display of disciplined passes and combinations in the second half. In a dramatic turnaround of events in the last 22 minutes, Bremen fired in two excellent goals through its Peruvian striker, Pizarro.
Pizarro netted in Diego’s pass past Milan’s goalkeeper Dida in the 68th minute making it 1-2 for Bremen. The play got intense after Bremen was desperate to pull another one up even as Milan strengthened its defense. Pizarro finally made it his night after firing in his second goal in the 79th minute. This goal made it 2-2 and took Bremen past Milan on away goals. It was a devastating end to Milan’s UEFA cup journey after leading most part of the match.
