This could be one of the hardest things you could ever try to do as a coach. Trying to get a group of great players communicating effectively enough to be able to get through the opposition with ease. Trying to make sure that every player puts the situation above their own personal gain. This means not thinking about scoring goals by yourself but rather thinking about the situation at hand and if there is anyone free to pass the ball to who is in a better position.
It All Comes Down To Being Selfish With The BallĀ
I know for a fact that everyone on my team is only interested in scoring goals. I play for the premiers of the football club and the idea of passing the ball around doesn’t seem to take any residence in the heads of our centres. To them it seems as though scoring goals is the much better option to go by. Unfortunately there are not too many opportunities for the centres to come face to face with the goal keeper, however, as impossible as it seems, they tend to run up and try to get through 4 defenders.
Team Cohesion Comes In
And this is where the idea of being stranded with the ball becomes obsolete. Especially when the idea of a single unit dedicated to working together for a common purpose comes to fruition. The best example I can think of is Real Madrid back in the day. They had greats such asZidane, Figo, Ronaldo, Beckham , Roberto Carlos and everybody expected them to do well and smash the entire Spanish League and the Champions League. However, it was not to be, instead we came to see a lackluster performance week in and week out. Why? Because they lacked team cohesion and were not working as a unit. Collectively combined, they had the potential to thump any team that stood in their way.
We Are In Real Madrid’s Position
And what do we do to get out of this mentality. Nothing but draws and losses. Individually we have a brilliant team and we should be unstoppable. But when you lack a simple thing like team bonding and cohesion, it can all fall apart too quickly. If anyone has thoughts or comments on how to reverse this trend I would be most interested to find out how. In the meantime, we train our asses off and what do we have to show for it? When we come to a match, the things we learn about passing and using the width of the field go out the door. So I implore you, just because you might not have a team full of superstars, it doesn’t mean that you can’t play better than a team of superstars. Don’t get threatened and keep your head up.
