It happens all the time and I for one can vouch for the fact that injuries suck and need to be dealt with quickly and effectively. First of all, it doesn’t only limit you from playing games with your team, your team suffers also. Because the team is a single cohesive unit purely dedicated to keep possession and flow throughout the game of football, the lack of a single entity on the team becomes an ordeal and as a result, preparations double and minor team building sessions need to take place.

What About Individual Ramifications?

Injuries don’t only let you down as an individual, it lets you game down also. I’m a good example of this. If you don’t know my story yet, here it is for you:

Then the unthinkable happened… during a representative match, I was sprinting down the sideline and then decided to pull the switch on the player that was running after me. As the ball came back on the inside, the defender lazily slid for the ball, studs up, hit my ankle and got back up by stepping on my toes.

At first I felt I could keep going, however, once ice was applied the severity of my injuries became rather clear to me. I would later on find out that my ankle was broken and that one of my toes received a fracture, indefinitely preventing me from playing the very best football I was capable of.

Crushed, shattered and bruised I lay down in the hospital pondering about my life and where it was to go now. I suffered with the injuries for 12 weeks and in that time watched a lot of football. It was there that I decided that I would help others since I could no longer pursue the dreams I had since I was a boy.

Plus I go on to talk about how I come to make this site happen and so forth, but that part isn’t important here. From the extract you can see injuries can change the life of a football player and send him away to be rendered useless, unfortunate, but that’s the way it is. There are even cases where an injury means that players become rendered useless for the rest of the season and if the player is rather old, say 35, retirement will come early which also is unfortunate. So the bottom line here is not to get an injury :)

When I Do Get injured, What Can I Do To Make It Quick?

  1. First and foremost, apply ice to the area that you are injured which will help induce swelling, stopping the injury from getting any worse.
  2. Once ice is strapped I implore you to visit the doctor or physiotherapist immediately to get an idea of what you are dealing with. You could go to a hospital also.
  3. If there might be suspected bone damage, they will advise you get an X-ray done. When the film is done, take it back to the doctor so he can give his medical opinion.
  4. You will now get the low down on your injury and a possible time-frame as to how long you will be out. Usually the hardest part of the process.
  5. Don’t play football until you fully recover and follow you doctors instructions meticulously.

The best thing for an injured player is rest and going out training or playing a game is far from intelligent. I can’t stress the importance of rest enough during times of injury. It’s just common sense and unfortunately took me a while to figure this out. I just love playing the game so much that I will go out injured and play the game with all my heart and all my physical being. Little did I know I was just making it worse.

Conclusions

So next time you suffer an injury, follow these steps and you should be up and running in no time. Plus remember, your team needs you, but you health and well being is always more important than the team and how they are doing in the league. The other day Ronaldinho missed two training sessions only because of a common case of the flu which outlined the fact that he is only human and so are you, therefore your rest is very important not only to you but your team also, even if some members don’t see it that way.
